Ford Motor Company today began production of its new Ford Fiesta, part of a new strategy to provide small cars globally in an effort to prop up sagging sales.

The first models are being built in Cologne, Germany. North American production is scheduled to begin in 2010 at a plant in Mexico.

In North America, Ford said the new subcompact will be offered as a "sporty European hatchback and ... two-door sedan."

The Cuautitlan Assembly Plant in Mexico, where those cars will be produced, is being retooled. It currently produces the F-Series trucks that have fallen out of favor as gas prices rose to record levels.

The Ford Fiesta has been around since 1976. It's considered part of a mini-class of cars. You can learn more about it here.
