The Oxford Dictionary has proclaimed "hypermiling" as its word of the year.

If you're not familiar with hypermiling, it's the way some drivers try to maximize their gas mileage - either by tweaking their vehicles, changing the way they drive, and often both.

Some automakers have noticed. Honda introduced its Eco Assist last week at the Los Angeles Auto Show. The Eco Assist - short for Ecological Drive Assist System - could be a boon to hypermilers and was featured on the Insight concept car in L.A.

It should be noted that not everyone takes a positive view of hypermiling. AAA (American Automobile Association), in fact, has come out against it, saying techniques used by hypermilers while driving are unsafe.
