Colin Powell's endorsement of Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama is just one of several nods Obama has received this weekend.
The Chicago Tribune, Washington Post and Philadelphia Inquirer also endorsed Obama. The Tribune never before had endorsed a Democrat for president; its endorsement said Obama is the "strongest candidate" to address the current econmoic situation.
Editor & Publisher is keeping a running tally of endorsements; its latest page is here.
As noted in this space previously, Republican candidate John McCain's standing - at least in the polls - has been hurt as the economy became the lead issue in the campaign. Powell and the Washington Post both noted dissatisfaction with McCain's choice of Sarah Palin as his running mate; the Post called the choice of Palin "irresponsible."
Palin's strength is energy issues, with energy the major economic driver for Alaska. But with oil prices - and the price of a gallon of gas - dropping in recent weeks, energy has taken a backseat to Wall Street in the campaign and apparently in the minds of many Americans.
