There's no need to leave Brooklyn for a Broadway caliber show.

Going out to a Broadway show is one of the treats of living in New York City. You go into Manhattan and watch a show, maybe go out for a nice dinner as well and then have a nice time for the evening. However, these days, with the economy in the doldrums, we all need to find ways to save money and as much as a Broadway show is a wonderful experience, the reality is it's likely to be the first thing to go in our budgets. While it's a shame not to see a show on Broadway, you don't have to give up theater all together. There is an alternative right here in Brooklyn with shows that are the equal of anything you'll see on Broadway and for a fraction of the price. It's called The Brooklyn Center for the Performing Arts at Brooklyn College.

Most people simply refer to the Brooklyn Center for the Performing Arts without adding on “at Brooklyn College” and it's often just abbreviated as BCBC, but whatever you call it, the shows at BCBC are every bit as enjoyable as anything you'll see on the stage on Broadway. Whats more, you can get great seats, much closer to the action and of course, the price, which is less than a third of typical Broadway show prices is the best part of all.

So what kind of shows are there at BCBC? Well, you can look for yourself at http://www.brooklyncenter.com/, but a recent glance at the web site's calendar showed these gems for incredibly cheap prices: Of Mice and Men on November 22, 2009 ($25 all seats) Hairspray ($40 Orchestra, $30 Mezzanine), on January 24, 2010 and “In the Mood” on March 28, 2010 ($25 all seats). These shows are not put on by the students at the college, but rather are professional, traveling shows which will let you watch a Broadway caliber performance for a fraction of the cost.

If Broadway shows are not your thing, but you still want to go out, there are lots of other shows being offered at BCBC as well. They include concerts, dance, recitals and plays put on by the students and the college conservatory. Many of these have the ridiculously low price of just $6 for the shows, so they are well worth seeing as well. There are even a few shows which are completely free, but be sure to show up early to get your seats.

In addition, with the Christmas season coming up, you may want to treat the kids to The Colonial Nutcracker, put on by the Dance Theater in Westchester (though showing at Brooklyn Center) for all of $6 a ticket. Be sure to buy your tickets soon since they will get snapped up fast at those prices.

If a theater experience is not complete for you without eating out, your choices in the area of Brooklyn College are somewhat limited. There are a few fast food places, but the nearest sit down restaurant with proper waiters and real tablecloths is a kosher deli style restaurant called The Palace Deli. Located on the corner of Avenue J and Nostrand Ave. they're about a ten minute walk from the theater.

The Brooklyn Center for the Performing Arts at Brooklyn College is also located about a block from the famous “junction” shopping area and you can easily spend some time before or after the show checking out some of the shops in the area, including the new Target anchored mall.
