The team that signs Matt Holliday will yield its first-round pick
in 2010 to the Cardinals.
Yesterday, the Elias Sports Bureau released their free-agent rankings, which determine whether a free agent is designated as Type A or Type B.
A free agent is designated as Type A if he rates in the top 20 percent (according to outdated criteria established by Elias) within his position based on two years of performance. Type B free agents are those players who rank in the 21-40 percent range. Any free agent outside of the 40th percentile is not classified.
The compensation for losing a Type A free agent is the signing team's first-round pick (unless if that pick is in the top 15, in which case the signing team's second-round pick is awarded), as well as a supplemental first-rounder. Type B free agents produce only the supplemental first-rounder. However, if a club is to receive compensation for losing a Type A or Type B free agent, it must first offer the player arbitration by the Dec. 1 deadline.
