According to AAA, this year will be an especially busy Thanksgiving for Ohio travelers, an expected 3% increase in traffic may cause some roadway headaches throughout the Buckeye State but the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) has a resource to help you traverse the highways to your eventual destination.
Buckeye Traffic is a service operated by ODOT that provides up-to-date information on roadways for those traveling through Ohio. The website includes data on weather conditions, traffic construction and any other possible causes for delays.
The information is collected by pavement sensors, monitoring stations, traffic cameras and by direct observation by ODOT employees.
The site features a map of Ohio with 2D, 3D, Road and Aerial capabilities. Selecting 2D shows a standard 2-dimensional view of the map, 3D enables travelers to see areas of the map in a neat 3 dimensional rendering, a service provided by Bing. The road function provides a classic map view, one that you might expect to find in your glove compartment, while the aerial selection shows an actual overhead photographic vantage point of the entire state.
A menu is set off in a column to the left of the map and features checkable items that allows users to view roadway data and statistics. Some options include closures and restrictions, road and weather sensors, traffic speed and even web cameras. Once you check a menu box the corresponding data is then shown on the map to the right.
A FAQ is available on the website to help assist any weary Ohio traveler.
Buckeye Traffic is nicely set up and provides close to real time data for those trekking about this holiday season. It might not do the traveling for you but it might help alleviate the need for an aspirin.
