I have noticed that many of the people in my graduating class can be found on Facebook. In fact, there are so many of the 30 and 40-somethings on Facebook that it is hard not to find people you went to school with on there.
Facebook has become the primary way for Gen Xers to reconnect with old friends and even long lost family members. It’s also a way to promote yourself, your work, what you’re selling and what you are feeling, all at the click of a button.
MySpace seems to be primarily the Gen Y crowd but Facebook is seen by Gen Xers as a legitimate means of communication on the internet. Most Generation X folks are pretty strict with who we allow access to on our Facebook page. We are not interested in 300 friends to show our popularity. Gen X is more apt to allow only people we actually know or have a legitimate reason to accept as Facebook friends.
Facebook also helps us bridge the gap between Gen Y and Gen X. After all, if we aren’t sure how to play Farm Town or Farmville on Facebook, a Gen Y guy or girl will surely be able to explain it. Plus Gen X gets to show off by taking the 80’s quizzes and feeling a little less old when we remember which band played which song. I’m a fan of Facebook, are you?
