With the economy in shambles and an uncertain future for many, local animal shelters are finding it difficult to cope with overcrowded facilities.
In a recent article from News 10 Now, Potsdam Humane Society Office Manager Kathy Brainard expressed her concern over the local shelter on Madrid Road, just outside the village. Overcrowding, she says, leads to illness which spreads like wildfire as animals, especially dogs, are left right next to each other. "We do not have the proper isolation areas, we don't have the proper ventilation," she says in the article.
Over the past year stories have revolved around the shelter as they try to expand and update the facilities. But for now, the shelter is desperate to make space. According to the article, the shelter is looking to give some animals away free in the upcoming weekend.
But the issue does not stop in Potsdam. Shelters are overcrowded across the state and country and financial strains take there toll on families. Stress has been put on spaying and neutering pets to help reduce the populations which continue to grow exponentially and cause more concern for the welfare of the animals already in need of a home.
