SUNY Canton in St. Lawrence County, NY, is implementing a new plan to help students cut the cost of getting an education.
Textbooks regularly run more then $100 a piece and take up a large portion of a students budget for class. But eight classes at SUNY Canton have decided to start a trial run for students to rent books, covering 45 to 65 percent of the book. Thus, the students will have to pay as little as $45 for a $100 book, less than even a used book.
"I can see it making a big difference in our students' lives," says SUNY Canton Provost William R. Trumble, according to NorthCountryNow.com.
Other colleges are planning similar programs as a way to deal with a growing online market where students typically purchase their textbooks. SUNY Canton will implement the idea to assist students with rising tuition and living costs.
The school will also leave the option open for students to purchase the books outright at the end of their classes.
