"I'll go to an eighth-grade graduation and there's all that pomp and circumstance and gowns and flowers. And I think to myself, it's just eighth grade. To really compete, they need to graduate high school, and then they need to graduate college, and they probably need a graduate degree too. An eighth-grade education doesn't cut it today. " President Barack Obama spoke these words in a church speech in Chicago last year, and he is putting his money where his mouth is.
More than ever at least a basic college education is necessary to be successful in the work place, and more now than ever anyone who wants a college education has an opportunity to earn one. The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act includes more than $30 billion to give everyone an opportunity for a college education.
The President's vision is for a 21st century filled with educated people who can give the U.S. the reputation for educated, resourceful people that it once held. In order to do this, he is provisioning the necessary resources, both monetary and in human resources. The Stimulus Plan calls for "career-ready standards and rigorous assessments that will improve both teaching and learning."
Since early education and a student's belief in the education system is as important at the money to go to college, the Stimulus Plan includes plans to improve achievement in schools where performance is low, ensure their are enough educated and effective teachers and make sure students are prepared to embark on college educations when they leave high school.
The President's plan calls for changes and improvements in many areas to ensure upcoming students are ready for college in the future and including encouraging adults to return to college now. More and more adults are doing just that - returning to college. It is an especially good course of action to take when more and more people are finding themselves unemployed with no job prospects in site. If you are one of those individuals, now is the time to make your life better.
