After true beer lovers die, they can only hope that their beer swilling soul ends up in a place like Cicero's.
Located at 6691 Delmar Blvd. in the University City Loop, Cicero's is like the Fort Knox of beer. They offer 53 different beers on tap and 155 different bottles. And like most places that have this kind of beer selection, they give you the "sampler" option for the curious drinker, where you get to try a few ounces of a few different beers to see what beverage may possibly lay you in the gutter 'til the next morning. And if just drinking the beer doesn't satisfy you, they also offer a "beer school" every Wednesday from 5:30 to 6:30 during the school year in which you learn about flavors, styles, and how the beers are made so you can become a first class beer aficionado. But wipe that drool from the corner of your mouth, you innocent junkie, because Cicero's isn't done yet.
The food menu is as big as the beer selection. From classic bar food to pasta, steak, seafood, wraps, and awesome desserts, its pretty hard to find something you won't like (FYI- their pizza is some of the best around).
The front of Cicero's seems like a normal bar/restaurant with everything you could want in those two words. The setup is ok; you have plenty of seating at the bar and in the dining room, there's a pool table and some TVs displaying the game, etc. While you're enjoying your lunch or dinner, you sometimes see a door near the back of the dining room open- no, wait- you hear it open because on the other side of that door is the live music venue.
The shotgun style, small sized venue is nothing special: stage, stage lights, another bar, sound booth, a few high tables, and so on. For utility purposes, it has everything a band needs (negative: sometimes the load in is a little difficult if Cicero's puts your band on a strict schedule because there's not a lot of room. positive: the sound is good and the sound guy is close enough to let him know what you need out of monitors) and everything the audience needs but, depending on the band, it can get very, very loud, which may not be a bad thing. Just a warning to those of you who may not be ready.
Cicero's venue hosts mostly local acts with good followings, but also invites the touring band coming through St. Louis when possible and a number of small local acts and Battles-of-the-Bands. Bands play at Cicero's about everyday and at all hours of the day, so there's a good chance you'll be able to hear some live music no matter what time you end up there.
Come to Cicero's next time you have an empty belly and a curiosity for a beer from... oh, let's say... Denmark this time.
