Did you know that March 8th  is a special day celebrated around the world?   International Women’s Day, IWD,  is an annual event set aside each year to  recognize and honor achievements made by women from yesterday, today and tomorrow as well as bring awareness to various civil and human rights.

More than one million women, and men, took part in the very first International Women’s Day back in 1911.  Today, it is a global event.   In some countries, it is actually a national holiday.

Hundreds of events are planned for IWD.    Individual countries and groups are able to create their own unique theme in honor of IWD.    Some of the themes this year include “Strong Leadership. Strong Women. Strong World: Equality”  from Canada.  Australia’s theme  is “Sharing the Caring for the Future ”  and  the United Nation's theme for 2009 is “Women and men united to end violence against women and girls.”  The United Nations has observed March 8 International Women’s Day since 1975.

It was not that long ago  that women worked in deplorable conditions or were unable to vote. This March 8th, let's remember the special women of the past who have paved the way for us today.  And although we still have some issues to tackle today, we really have come a long way, baby!
