Workforce: Women may soon outnumber men
American women may soon outnumber men in the workforce, due in part to the economy. According to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, there are now 68 million American women working, just under half of the total American workforce.
Although the slumping economy has hit all sectors of life, men have been hit especially hard. In fact, 82 percent of job losses have impacted men. In the last year alone, about 3 million American men have lost their jobs. Pretty sobering news, isn’t it?
If the economy continues to decline and unemployment continues to rise, American women may soon overtake the predominantly male workforce, forcing many to become the families’ primary bread winner. Since women typically earn less money than men, work fewer hours and receive fewer benefits according to governmental figures, the outlook is not encouraging.
