It's easy to see nothing but dark economic clouds right now.  There are certainly enough of them at the moment and heaven knows all that glowering can be distracting.  All the more reason then, that we should take a moment to pause and appreciate a success story.

One of my very favorite interns came to me a few months ago when she graduated college and asked for help finding a job.  Two years ago she would have been fending off job offers, but this year she was deeply worried about whether she'd be able to find anything at all.  I was worried too, frankly, because I’ve had little success helping my former students find work this year.

I sent her resume to a friend in HR at one of the major agencies, expecting what I'd heard from all of the other resumes I've sent there recently - "thanks, we're not hiring right now."  Instead, my friend called me back and said, "What kind of desk does she want?"  Before either of us could catch our breath, my intern was interviewing, first with HR then with a fantastic agent in the department of her dreams. Three days later, I received the following email:

"I GOT THE JOB!!! START TUESDAY!!!!"

I haven't stopped smiling yet.  Does this mean that the struggle to make it in this crazy mixed up business has suddenly become a walk in the park?  Of course not.  But, for me, and now I hope for you, it's a night light in the darkness before the dawn.  A ray of sunshine through the clouds. Keep the faith, be smart and savvy and work hard, and you can, in fact, get paid to be in the picture business.
