Hillsborough County students will soon be able to use their Ipod devices for other things besides music and video thanks to Apple and the Florida Department of Education (FLDOE). They’ve united with several school districts to launch Florida iTunes U, a section of the iTunes website with lessons from classrooms across Florida available for free downloading. Teachers also can use the materials as long as they are part of curriculum standards.
Courses are limited to pre-algebra, Spanish 3 and Seminoles in Florida for a small handful of Florida school districts and also the Florida Virtual School. As for Hillsborough County, it’s the eighth largest district in the nation so it won’t be long. But as for other informational content, students, parents, teachers and administrators will be able to access digital audio and video, text files, podcasts and supporting documents such as presentations and research reports. The offerings are expected to grow.
And for those of you who don’t own an iPod, Apple didn’t leave you out. You can use your PC or Mac computer with an Internet connection to download the free iTunes software and access Florida on Florida iTunes U.
You can also visit Florida on iTunes U through the iTunes U section of the iTunes Store. Look under K-12 for the Florida Department of Education. Florida's current content partners include the Florida Department of Education, Florida Memory: State Library and Archives of Florida, the Florida Humanities Council, the School District of Manatee County, Broward County Public Schools, Escambia County School District, Orange County Public Schools, the Florida Center for Instructional Technology, and Florida Virtual School.
