Adaptation of the Javier Grillo-Marxuach comic, "The Middleman", to a TV series for ABC Family helped spike mainstream interest in the Viper Comics cult favorite, but not enough to guarantee further development of the story.
In both the comic and television productions, the clean cut hero, his sassy sidekick, and their snide office android face off against a variety of monsters and unlikely villains. Sharp wit and subtle, humorous references to popular culture give this series such wide appeal.
Though the television series ran for only one season with ABC Family, cast appearances at recent Comic Cons were met with such celebration that Viper rolled out a new installment of story, "The Doomsday Armageddon Apocalypse!" in August, 2009. The graphic novel is a continuation of the storyline portrayed by the television series. The Middleman and sidekick Wendy are confronted by the evil media conglomerate FATBOY, and the two are put in a scenario of sacrifice "so ultimate it will shake the Middleman universe to its very foundation," says Viper.
Grillo-Marxauch and Viper Comics were hopeful of reviving the series, but currently there is no follow-up issue on the horizon. A recent push among fans of the canceled ABC Family adaptation of "The Middleman" is for the program to be contracted by another cable network, with the focus of these efforts presently directed toward the SyFy Channel.
