Secretary of the Interior, Ken Salazar, and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Foundation signed a permit yesterday to begin construction on a Martin Luther King, Jr Memorial to be built on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.
Work to establish a memorial began in 1996 when Congress authorized Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. to begin designing a memorial to honor the late civil rights activist. Dr. King became a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity in 1952 while pursuing his graduate studies at Boston Univeristy.
The memorial, which will include the use of water, stone and trees, will comprise a four acre section of land in a direct line between the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials. The Memorial is expected to be complete in 2011.
