?An often heard observation”I’d love to come to Mexico, but I’m afraid to drive there because
every one is crazy”.. This made by someone who has no problems driving a California freeway at
rush hour.
Driving down here is different; you will encounter much more courtesy than you’re used to, but
apart from that driving here is like driving in any reasonably civilized country.
The roads are in good shape and very well marked. Coming down from San Diego heading South
you will have a choice between the free road and the “scenic” road which is a four lane limited
access toll highway that will take you all the way into Ensenada, some 50 miles South passing
most of the beach resorts and American retirement communities.
Be aware that he speed limits are largely ignored, but don’t find yourself ahead of a group
tootling along as it’s the leader that gets pulled over. Doesn’t happen often, but it can. Content
yourself with staying in the middle of the pack and you’ll have no problems.
Driving in the cities is like driving in any busy city with stop and go traffic taxis darting in and
out, and difficult parking. Take your time and drive as you usually do.
You MUST have Mexican liability insurance which is available at a number of places at the
border for about $15.00 a day. If you get into a fender bender without it you will be given the
option of paying for the damage done on the spot or having your car impounded until blame has
been assigned and damages paid.
If you do get pulled over for a traffic infraction it will be Federal Police on the toll road or the
city police on the free road. Don’t argue with the cop. Do sound sincerely sorry that you have
abused the hospitality of this wonderful country by driving badly. Once said you will then ask
“How can I make this good?”. You will be told that you have to follow them to the judge who
will assess your fine. You then ask “Could I give you the money to pay the fine for me?” . The
city police will always go for this deal and the amount is then open to negotiation. With the
Federal Police its 50 50 and that depends on what you did. Minor speeding and you may get off
with a warning. Be drunk and nothing on earth is going to keep you out of jail...which as it
should be.
If your comfortable driving at home you will have no problems in paradise.
