Does the moon ever feel insignificant? Does it ever wish it were as important as the sun? Does the moon wish that it were the center of our solar system? Afterall, the moon certainly would have good reason to feel self-conscious and unworthy.
The moon reflects the light that radiates from the sun but isn't a source of light itself. Its surface is covered with craters, the result of countless meteor strikes. Our moon is beat up - in need of moon-sized band-aids and cosmetic surgery. Caught within our gravitational field the moon has no choice but to circle the earth over and over again at dizzying speed. It's enough to give the moon an excedrin headache!
Yet, for it's small place within our solar system, the moon is marvelous. It plays with the waters of our oceans, pulling and releasing, pulling and releasing. We notice this 'playfulness' as high tide and low tide. The moon when full lights up the dark shadows of the night reflecting beautifully upon still mountain lakes and sparkling snow.
Humans from all walks of life have told stories about the moon's creation, written poetry, music, and been teased with its many 'faces.' The moon has always been both romantic and mysterious. It called to the brave and visionary among us who found a way through sheer persistence to reach the moon and walk upon it. From the surface of the moon, we received unforgettable images of our magnificent blue Earth and we fell in love.
No, nothing is insignificant in the natural world - not the moon, an ant, a piece of seaweed, or us. Can you imagine our world without the moon? Our planet's water levels would be affected, our literature, art, music, and imaginations would lose something meaningful and special. Can we imagine our world without you?
The next time you feel insignificant and small, remember our humble moon. Everything in our Creator's natural world has it's unique and valuable place. Everything is loved and worthy of that love - especially you.
Peace to all
