Many religions use prayer beads or rosaries - Roman Catholicism, Islam, Buddhism, Sikhism, Hinuism, and Orthodox Christianity among others.
Prayer beads have been in use for hundreds of years. The earliest use of prayer beads has been traced back to Hinduism where they are referred to as Japa Mala or "garland."
Most commonly, prayer beads are used to count repetitions of prayers, chants or devotions but may also be used for meditation and protection from negative energy.
Prayer beads and rosaries can be made from a variety of materials including precious and semi-precious stones, wood, seeds, and animal bone. Some inexpensive rosaries are made of plastic.
Whether or not one subscribes to a particular religion, prayer beads are helpful in acting as a focusing tool in prayer and meditation. Holding these beads in one's hands or wearing them about the neck or wrist can remind us that we are never alone. That there is always a Higher Power available to comfort us, protect us, and strengthen us. Prayer beads can also be hung on a wall near our bed or wrapped around a bedpost. The presence of the beads can help us to drift off into a more peaceful sleep knowing we are not alone in our worries, that "this too shall pass."
If you don't already have prayer beads or rosaries at home, consider buying some or even making one for yourself. Select one that speaks to you in some way. Their daily use can be a source of spiritual growth and comfort for you.
Peace to all
