Holidays are a joyous time for getting together with friends and traveling to your loved ones to share good food while catching up. However, with the last minute arrangements, it’s important not to forget your pets. If this is your first time needing a kennel or you’re looking for a new one, here are some tips to help you.

To start your search, you need to know where the kennels are in your area. A simple Google search can give you more of an overwhelming response than ever imagined. Two of the best ways to narrow your search are to ask your veterinarian or your friends and co-workers. Besides giving you the recommendation, they can give you their review of the kennel. Online reviews are available for most boarding facilities, but it is important to keep in mind that anyone can write a review whether true or not.

Cindy Morgan, manager of Acorn Valley Pet Boarding, gave some insight when searching for the right kennel. She stated that it is important to tour a kennel. However, you should be able to tour the facility without an appointment scheduled. Much like a pop quiz, this will be a guarantee that at all hours, the facility is properly maintained and the pets are properly cared for. When going for the tour, there are a few things to keep in mind. Primarily, look at the cleanliness of the facility. At Morgan’s facility, workers sanitize and clean the kennel every day. Next, make note of the odor when entering the facility. Morgan did note, “every place is going to smell (like dogs and cats), but you do not want to be overpowered when walking through the door.” While walking through the kennel, check out the cage sizes. Make sure that your pets will be able to freely move around. Messes do happen and you want your pet to have the ability to move away from it.

After walking through the facility, take time to speak with employees. Friendly and caring staff will indicate how they will be with your pets while you are away. Speaking with them will also allow you to find out more about the facility’s policies such as what the cost of boarding includes. Be aware that some facilities charge extra for services that you may think are included such as extra attention, playtime, administering medication and specialized diets. At Acorn Valley Pet Boarding, many of these services are included in the price.

As important as your holiday plans are, it is just as important to find a boarding facility where you feel comfortable to leave your pets. Peace of mind will allow you to enjoy your friend’s and family’s company without the worry of how your pet is faring in your absence.
