XM Radio's "real jazz" channel has been running the following promo: "The swing of Prestige, the sheen of Verve, the soul of Blue Note."
The promo refers to the three great independent jazz labels of the 1950s, and it fixes each of them with just one word. And the words are right. While none of these labels did just one thing, Blue Note is probably best remembered for the funky sound of Horace Silver and Art Blakely, Verve for the polished stylings of Oscar Peterson and Ella Fitzgerald, Prestige for the swinging rhythm sections of the likes of Red Garland, Paul Chambers and Philly Joe Jones,
This is a good exercise in finding exactly the right word, Take three examples of something you know really well. Try to define each one, and differentiate each one from the rest, with just one word.
