A great way to keep off the holiday pounds, jogging!
A great way to keep off the holiday pounds, jogging!

One wonderful thing about fall in Birmingham is the weather, the cool air is great for taking a jog around the neighborhood, at your gym or local track.

Before your run:

  1. Drink lots of water, almost double that of a sedentary person.
  2. Stretch before and definitely after

Benefits of Running-

It's one of the best aerobic exercises and cuts down on health risks of all sorts. It also helps with stress and some depression. It's a great way to lose weight if it's paired with a good diet.

Where to Go-

If street jogging is not for you, local churches may have tracks for runners. Some schools may, too. Birmingham has lots of local groups for running that cater to all skill levels

Birmingham Track Club- Sponsors plenty of local events and regular group jogs (http://www.birminghamtrackclub.com/).

Wednesday Fun Jog- Homewook Trak Shak has a group jog every Wednesday at 5:30pm that ends with a get-together with refreshments and a keg at the end. (http://trakshak.com/).

What to Wear-

Trak Shak will see what shoe will be best for you. They are very helpful and affordable. Shoes help prevent shin splints and stress fractures. Wearing bad or old shoes is asking for trouble!(http://trakshak.com/)

What to Eat-

Ever heard of carb loading? Even if you are trying to cut your calories and lose weight, make sure to eat some carbs 2-6 hours before running. A drink with natural sugars is also good before running, like orange juice or gatorade.

Protein is important to for muscles. Chicken and eggs are great sources of protein. A 5'5" woman needs about 35 grams of protein a day. One jumbo egg has about 8 grams of protein. So consider eating protein-dense foods for better health and better energy.

If you are not feeling well after running, consider a look at your diet and make sure you are getting enough food and water.
