A friend of accused killer Alyssa Bustamante says that in January the teen talked about what it would be like to kill someone.
Jennifer Meyer told St. Louis TV station KMOV that her friend Bustamante, who is accused of killing 9-year-old Elizabeth Olten, made the comment while they were at the teen's birthday party.
"I was at her party, and she kind of just took me off to the side randomly and she’s like, ‘You know, I wonder what it would be like to kill somebody,’ because I guess she was mad at one of her friends there, but it just seemed kind of strange,” Meyer said.
Meyer says that she didn't think that Bustamante actually intended to kill anyone, “You wouldn’t logically think one of your friends would kill somebody.”
Olten went missing on the evening of Oct. 21, while walking home from a friend’s house. Nearly 1000 people had participated in a massive two-day search on horseback, ATV’s, and on foot, until police received a handwritten note leading them to Olten's neighbor Bustamnte.
Authorities then say Bustamante led them to the girl’s body which was in a heavily wooded area that had already been searched. Police say the body was heavily concealed so it was easy to miss.
Authorities say Bustamante told investigators that she killed the girl to “To know what it felt like to kill someone.”
Meyer said that the two girls have been friends for several years, and the last time she talked to Bustamante was two days before Olten was killed.
The accused Missouri teen was moved last week from jail to a mental hospital for severe depression and anxiety.
If convicted Bustamante could face life in prison.
