Authorities are investigating whether Anthony Sowell, 50, is responsible for any other murders or rapes in other places that the suspected serial killer has lived.
The FBI has said that it will investigate any new leads in the case against Sowell, who while serving in the Marine Corps from 1978 to 1985, was stationed in Parris Island, S.C.; Cherry Point, N.C.; Okinawa, Japan; and Camp Pendleton, C.A.
Police in East Cleveland are also reviewing three murders from 1988 and 1989 that remain unsolved. Authorities say Sowell lived in that area at the time, which was after he got out of the Marine Corps, and before he went to prison for attempted rape.
The Sowell story broke when police went to Sowell’s house Oct. 22 to investigate a rape charge. Police didn’t find their suspect, but instead discovered badly decomposed bodies inside. A search by police inside and outside of the house eventually found a total of 11 bodies, all African-American women.
Upon hearing news of the case at least two women who lived near Sowell have come forward to say they escaped being raped and strangled by him.
On Monday Sowell was charged with felony assault, kidnapping, attempted murder, and rape for the original charges that led police to his house. These new charges are in addition to the five counts of rape and aggravated murder charges that Sowell is also facing.
Also on Monday police identified two more victims found at Sowell’s house, bringing the number of identified victims to 9.
Those identified at the house so far are, Tonia Carmichael, 53; Telacia Fortson, 31; Tishana Culver, 31; Nancy Cobbs, 43; Amelda Hunter, 47; Chrystal Dozier, 38; Michele Mason, 45; Janice Webb, 49; Kim Yvette Smith, 44.
