Authorities announced on Monday that they are charging three of the five teenagers accused of setting fire to a Deerfield Beach, Fla. teen, as adults.
The Broward State Attorney’s Office said Denver Jarvis and Matthew Bent, both 15, and Jesus Mendez, 16, were each charged with one count of second-degree attempted murder.
Two other teens, Steven Shelton, 15, and Jeremy Jarvis, 13, were charged in juvenile court and released on Monday. Prosecutors have not ruled out charging them as adults in the future.
Maria Schneider, assistant state attorney in charge of the county's juvenile unit said "This is a very active, ongoing investigation," Schneider said. "As additional information becomes available, then we have the option to revisit our filing decision."
The disturbing incident for which the teens are charged occurred on Oct. 12. Police say 15-year-old Michael Brewer was doused with rubbing alcohol and set ablaze by schoolmates over a $40 video game dispute.
Brewer, who suffered burns over 65 percent of his body, remains in critical condition at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, Florida. He is on a ventilator to help him breath, and has been unable to speak to authorities about the attack.
Dr. Nicholas Namias, medical director of the burn center at Jackson Memorial Hospital said about Brewer’s condition, "Our expectation is survival, and we would be devastated if he didn't. But I don't think that we would be surprised if he didn't."
Jarvis, Bent and Menendez will be transferred to the juvenile section of the Broward County Jail. The state attorney’s office said they wouldl ikely be arraigned next week..
