A long Island woman is accused of running what her son called an 'animal concentration camp.' Sharon McDonough is accused of torturing, killing and burying animals behind her house
Acting on a tip from her son, police went to her house and discovered 5 dogs crammed into small cages. The police immediately sensed something was wrong. That's when the 7 children living with McDonough pointed them to the backyard where police found at least 20 animals buried in makeshift graves.
McDonough, 36, was arrested Saturday for six counts of animal cruelty involving dogs and a cat. She was released without bail. Authorities are investigating whether any animals found dead in the woman's backyard had been mistreated, if so, additional charges are possible.
Roy Gross, chief of the Suffolk County SPCA, said the five dogs and the cat that were found alive, but all suffered from maltreatment inside cramped cages in a room of the house.
She faces up to a year in jail if convicted on the current misdemeanor animal cruelty cases, but could face up to 2 years in prison if upgraded felony charges for torturing the animals are filed, Gross said.
After news of the gruesome discovery broke, dozens of neighbors who have missing pets have contacted authorities to see if their pets have been found at the scene, a scene one veteran SPCA official has described as something out of a horror movie.
