One of the simplest and easiest methods to release old emotions and help a person relax is to hold each of the five fingers one at a time for about 3 to 5 minutes. To open these feelings and experiences and to release stress that blocks and limits us, simply wrap the fingers of the opposite hand around each finger, one at a time, and gently hold until you feel a steady, rhythmic pulse indicating that balance and harmony is achieved in that flow pattern, usually about three to five minutes per finger. Remember to breathe long, deep breaths while you do this on yourself. (If you are holding someone else's fingers, invite them to take deep, relaxing breaths while you're working with them.) This will always revitalize, refresh, relax, and center you. Excellent for insomina, too! These are also known as the "Quickie Finger Relase of Mental and Emotional States," and they are based in a form of acupressure called Jin Shin Jyutsu. See my earlier article for more.
This is the way I remember what each finger releases:
1) The thumb helps release insecurity: Children who feel insecure suck their thumb; we adults can hold our thumbs. The thumb is connected to the stomach & spleen, and holding it helps bring in security, confidence, the ability to give and receive, love, manifestation, and memory.
2) The index finger releases fear: People who are about to give a lecture are often caught holding their index finger. The index finger is connected to the kidney and bladder, and holding it helps bring in vitality, longevity, sparkle, courage, and strength.
3) The third finger relases anger: Interesting... we give people the finger when we're angry, but perhaps we should be holding our third finger instead? The third finger is connected to the liver and gall bladder -- where we store our anger! -- and helps bring in enthusiasm, mental clarity, the ability to focus, plan and act, and inspiration.
4) The fourth finger relases sorrow and grief: I think of Christopher Reeves' wife Dana who had developed lung cancer by the time her husband was dying. Perhaps her grief got stuck in her lungs? The fourth finger is connected to the lungs, large intestine, umbilicus, and diaphragm and helps to bring in open and clear communication, supports evolution, change, and letting go.
5) The pinky (little finger) releases denial and confusion: Perhaps all of us could use to hold this finger nowadays?! It is connected to the heart and small intestine, and helps bring in joy, giving and receiving, love, laughter, action, and spiritual opening.
Finally, you can hold the middle of the palm of your opposite hand (with your middle three fingers) which is the "total harmonizing point." And I like to first use some of my favorite essential oil(s) on my hands before holding my fingers and palms; this adds another beautiful dimension to this healing modality.
I encourage you to try these fingerholds sometime, on yourself, or on a loved one. It's a very simple method to help ease stress and increase relaxation and health. Try it at the end of the day when you're ready to relax and unwind, or when you simply need to take some time out to breathe, relax, and be good to yourself! To your health and well being, Dancing heart~~~
P.S. The above picture is of Mary Burmeister, the teacher of Jin Shin Jyutsu who brought this Japanes method of acupressure to the U.S. in the 1950's with the help of master teacher Jiro Murai.
And here's another website from New Zealand that I've just learned about. They're putting together a self-help booklet for people going through cancer. When it's finished, they're hoping to link it to the website...
