I came to know Dr. Kayo King, a licensed acupuncturist, through the World Peace Prayer Society, or Byakko (white light) Shinko Kai of Japan. She offered to give me a free treatment so that I could see what it was all about; and I took her up on it. I became hooked on acupuncture! It's a wonderful way to create deep relaxation in my body -- and the treatments always make me feel better in mind, body, and spirit. It has actually been a pleasant surprise to experience how helpful and pain-free this modality of treatment has turned out to be. This may have something to do with Dr. King's skill and grace as well? She is Japanese, so we get to speak in Nihongo (Japanese!) whenever I visit her... what a treat.

I know that more and more people are appreciating the benefits of acupuncture, whether to deal with pain, stress, physical imbalance of all kinds, or end-of-life care. There are two main forms of acupuncture: Traditional Chinese and Japanese. The Chinese style uses bigger needles for deeper stimulation; the Japanese kind has finer, longer needles that stimulate more superficially and gently. The World Health Organization recognizes that Acupuncture can treat

over 200 commonly encountered clinical disorders, among them: gastrointestinal disorders, urogenital disorders, disorders of the bones, muscles, joints and nervous system, emotional and psychological disorders, and chronic and painful debilitating disorders. Acupuncture is especially know in this culture for its treatment of chronic pain. (found in Dr. King's brochure -- reprinted w/ permission in my book, pp. 176 - 178)

Here's what Dr. King writes about oriental medicine:

Traditional Oriental medicine is a comprehensive system of healthcare with a continuous clinical tradition of over 3,000 years. It includes acupuncture and herbal treatment as well as massage, dietary therapy, meditation, and exercise. These therapies work with the natural vital energies inherent within all living things to promote the body's ability heal itself. This system of health care is used extensively by one-quarter of the world's population who reside in the Orient and is rapidly growing in popularity in the West. (p. 176)

And some of the reasons acupuncture is becoming popular in the United States are:

  • 1. It puts people back in control of their own bodies and health care.
  • 2. It works on many health problems for which Western medicine is less effective.
  • 3. It is safe, effective, and has virtually no side effects.
  • 4. It treats the whole person and not just the disease.
  • 5. It uses the body's natural healing processes to effect relief.
  • 6. It feels so good and relaxing to have a treatment! (p. 178)

While visiting the lovely city of Olympia recently, I came across a quote for the day: "Every day, do one thing that scares you." So, if the needles used in acupuncture have scared you in any way, I invite you to try a treatment of acupuncture sometime soon. Assuming that you find a practitioner as skillful as Dr. Kayo, you'll be amazed at how painless it is -- and how it takes the pain away!

Blessings of Deep Joy and an Open Heart, Dancing heart~~~
