The healing power of guided imagery (part 2)
Just sitting with a loved one recalling a pleasant memory can bring great comfort.
Try this exercise with your loved one:
You might have your loved one think of a memory from a time when he or she felt loved, comforted, and peaceful – the kind of memory that brings on a warm smile, and that warm fuzzy feeling in your chest.
Next, guide your loved one to take a few deep, comfortable, relaxing breaths, deep into the belly, “breathing in all that you need as you inhale and releasing all that you don’t need as you exhale.”
Now have your loved one begin to describe their memory, encouraging them to just take themselves back to that time in their mind. Ask questions invoking the use of the senses as you hear this memory. What is the temperature like? Let yourself feel that warm sunny day on your skin…or the light breeze. Are there any sounds in the background? Hear the birds, or the leaves rustling in the wind. What does it smell like? Breathe in the fragrance of the garden, the aroma the forest. Then ask, “How do you feel as you recall…?”
We have all that we need, we truly do. Imagery is a tool that can help connect us to this sacred knowledge. Each and every one of us has the capacity to use imagery; it is the way our brains work. When we worry about the past or future, we are using imagery. Unfortunately this worrying creates states of stress or tension in our bodies rather than relaxation and peace. Directing our thoughts to those of love, peace, and joy brings great comfort to the body—physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Where the mind goes, the body follows.
