The power of touch -- acupressure (Jin shin Jyutsu)
I met Pam Fry, a registered nurse who teaches a form of acupressure called Jin Shin Jyutsu, through my interest in learning more about this ancient Japanese healing modality. Pam has a wealth of knowledge and many years of experience with this healing art. She graciously agreed to write the following piece for the last chapter of my book, based on her expertise in this area. Thank you, Pam, for this good information, about energy and the power of touch.
High Touch Jin Shin
Jin Shin Jyutsu is an ancient Japanese healing art that dates back at least 5,000 years. In ancient times it was a system of hands-on healing for restoring health, harmony, and balance. Jin translates to mean “Man, compassionate Spirit”; Shin means “God, Spirit”; and Jyutsu, “Art.” Loosely translated it means “The art of God coming into man of compassion and knowing.” My teacher, Mary Iino Burmeister, calls it the art of knowing and helping myself; a gift from the Creator, meant to be shared for the health and well being of everyone.
Human Energy
The human energies are a network of functions that govern every aspect of being alive, from the thoughts we think, to the food we digest, to making our heartbeat. They follow very specific pathways, just like our circulation and nervous system does. These lines of energy are traceable with radio-isotopic dyes injected into acupuncture points. Consider the electromagnetic energy of the body like the wiring of a house; you can’t see it but when you turn on a light, it is working. If a circuit blows, the light, or whatever is governed by that circuit, no longer functions properly. It is very much the same in our bodies. When a pressure point that governs the circulation of this electrical energy through the body becomes congested with tension, stress or toxins, it ceases to function properly and some areas become congested and overloaded, while others are now deficient of vital energy. The symptoms arise first as mental/emotional attitudes of stress, and progress to many of the physical distress symptoms of which we become aware.
These energies flow freely within the body, like rivers, feeding and cleaning every cell. With stress of any kind (mental, emotional, physical, traumatic), a block in the flow of energy can occur and the healing potential of the body is diminished. Over time, more and more of these circuits become blocked and inefficient, thereby diminishing one’s health.
This vital, life-sustaining energy comes to us through the air we breathe (prana), the live food we eat (the integration of the action of the sun, earth, and water), and through the sun which is absorbed by the skin and integrated into these pathways. It is the energy reflected by EEG, EKG (electrical energy of vitality). We all have had experiences of having more or less of this vital, life-giving energy; it’s called “VITALITY!” Health is not just the absence of disease, but a vital, energetic, healthy, happy countenance, an enthusiasm for life and the energy to ful?ll our dreams. Acupuncture, shiatsu, acupressure, and many other systems of healing acknowledge and utilize the principles of these energy flows.
Jin Shin Treatment Jin Shin is truly a holistic therapy. It does heal at the level of body, mind, and spirit, seeking the source of the imbalance and restoring harmony.
A treatment can be done on oneself, or on another. The client lies on a table, fully clothed, face up, while the therapist uses LIGHT touch over acu-points on the body. Two points are held simultaneously until the tension is cleared, signaled by the synchronous pulsation felt at the point(s); then the hand is moved to another point, and so on along the areas of tension, much like re-mapping out the flow pattern and checking the circuitry along the way. It is very much like placing a jumper cable on a battery and adding just a boost to the person’s system to clear the congestion and stress out of the blocked point. When the circulation pattern is restored, the body knows where the energy is needed, and goes about the job of healing.
Each point can take seconds to minutes to release and re-energize. Treatments generally take 45–90 minutes with a short period of rest and teaching of self-help. Aromatherapy essential oils are often used to enhance relaxation and pain relief. Stress management and lifestyle are discussed to the degree that they apply to the circumstance presented. Repeated treatments depend on the individual and the particular situation. For some chronic situations, a period of regular treatments may be needed; often there is great improvement with just a few sessions. Many people have come for relief of back/neck pain, asthma, insomnia, digestive problems, PMS, chronic fatigue, and general stress-related problems. Some people are aware that they have been over-doing and just need a “tune-up.” It is always up to the individual, and I will offer recommendations. Many people use Jin Shin as a preventive therapy to maintain optimal health and vitality.
Jin Shin is a special gift to give yourself. It is deeply relaxing and pleasurable. After a treatment, symptoms may or may not be relieved. Often they are improved within 8 - 24 hours. People often feel invigorated and sleep better. Early release of tension is good preventive care. When stress is held and repressed in the body over a period of time, disease can result. It is called DIS-EASE—not at ease! Experience this for yourself!
