Hypnotherapy is another mode of therapy that can help people who are out of balance, seriously ill, or dying. Not long ago I heard that my friend's brother who's dealing with a form of colon cancer had benefited greatly from some medical hypnotherapy that was recommended to him. Through his hypnotic trance, he was given the gift of finding himself "at one with his surroundings: with ocean, wind, sand, and sun, with a particular stone that I picked up in the trance." This beautiful image -- that he continues to use and re-experience -- has helped him become aware that his death will be a returning to "eternal unity all that I have kept separate," and that it would be a "crossing to safety."

My friend and hypnotherapist who works in North Seattle, Darlene Harris, wrote the following paragraphs for the section on "Hypnotherapy" in the last chapter of my book, The Last Adventure of Life:

Hypnotherpy processes can address needs of dying patients and family members for sleep issues, releasing anxiety, pain management, and dealing with impending separation, loss, and grief.

For some patients, pain management strategies can provide alternatives to morphine and drugs to allow at least short periods of time for communication between the dying person, spouse and relatives. This can be useful for creating quality family time and saying goodbye.

The natural trance state commonly referred to as hypnosis accesses the bene?ts of the theta brain wave state, measurable by EKG, which enables those with ability to focus and willingness to follow suggestions, to achieve a level of relaxation. In a state of trance the power of the imagination can be tapped for a variety of bene?ts, including comfort and peace, calming anxiety, releasing worries and concerns, gaining clarity in decision making, inducing sleep, Soul level communication for resolving trauma, abuse and old issues, and generally enhancing quality of life.

Albert Einstein has said, “Imagination is more powerful than knowledge…. Everything has changed with the splitting of the atom, except one thing—the way we think. We must change the way we think.”

Persons with capability to focus and willingness to learn can be taught to access or create a special place in their imagination, or a favorite place in nature, for relaxation, comfort, and temporary relief from anxiety. For patients who have varied ability to focus, there are guided imagery scripts that can be read aloud. This process has the quality of accessing in?nite possibilities as the nature of the imagination is expansive. It can be playful and fun.

The second part of Darlene's piece will be continued in tomorrow's article. Darlene also runs a process called "Stop Smoking in One Hour," for those of you who may be interested.
