These stormy economic times are affecting everyone, including Christians. But as followers
of Christ, we have a source that those in the world cannot know nor access. Our Heavenly
Father promises in His word to meet all His children’s needs, not only for our sakes, but
also that we may bless others.
While many claim we are beginning economic recovery, no one knows for sure if it will last,
or when we will fully recover. In fact, the latest figures on jobs indicate over 10%
unemployment for the first time since the early 1980’s.
Nevertheless, the Psalmist encourages us, “I have never seen the righteous forsaken, or his
children begging bread.” For those of us who have committed our lives to God’s hands through
placing our faith in Christ for our salvation, we have His promises to care for us which are
of more worth than gold and silver. Jesus tells us to seek His Kingdom and all our needs
will be met. Then He makes an amazing statement: “Do not be afraid little flock for your
Father has chosen gladly to give you the Kingdom.” (Luke 12:31-32)
This promise is stunning in its magnitude: not only does the Father assure us He will meet
all our daily needs, but that He joyfully gives us His very Kingdom. Consider the earthly
splendor of the kingdoms of history: the Egyptian dynasties of such Pharaohs as Rameses II,
the empires of Nebuchadnezzar in Babylon, Alexander in Greece or the Caesars in Rome. Yet
the Kingdom of God is no mere earthly kingdom regardless of worldly greatness. The Kingdom
of God is a never ending Kingdom that will exceedingly surpass and easily trump all mere
human kingdoms. As the Lord’s Prayer concludes, “for Yours is the Kingdom, and the power,
and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.”
The implications of this promise are a subject unto itself. Yet we are joint heirs with
Christ, and beneficiaries of all the resources of His Kingdom: His salvation, Word, the Holy
Spirit, His love, peace, joy, power and authority. And provision for all of our needs,
whether spiritual or material. John the apostle wrote, “Beloved, I wish above all things
that you may prosper and be in health, even as your soul prospers.” (III John 2)
Followers of Christ are citizens of the Kingdom of Heaven. And in this Kingdom there are no
economic downturns, unemployment or scarcity. Therefore, we can heed Jesus’ words, “Peace, I
leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives, do I give to you. Let not
your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful.”
