Murray State's season-opening basketball opponent, California is getting plenty of preseason attention. As Cal Bears Examiner Rob Calonge reports, Cal recently was selected as the preseason Pac-10 favorite for only the second time in school history.
Mike Montgomery, who took Stanford to the Final Four before losing to Kentucky in 1998, returned to the Pac-10 after an unsuccessful stint in the NBA with the Golden State Warriors. He spent two years in television before taking the Cal job.
The Bears were picked to finish 8th in the Pac-10 a year ago, but Cal ended up 22-11 and third in the Pac10at 11-7 in Mongomery's first season in Berkley, falling in the first round of the NCAA Tournament to Maryland.
Cal has two outstanding guards in Jerome Randle (18.3 PPG) and Patrick Christopher (14.5 PPG).
The Golden Bears open up exhibition season on Thursday against Chico State.
The Racers and the Golden Bears will open up 2009-10 season on Tuesday, November 9th on ESPU in the 2K Sports Classic benefitting Coaches versus Cancer.
