Being able to distinguish among the living dead is a vital skill for survival in any zombie incident. Whether its a minor outbreak or the full-blown, world-encompassing zombie apocalypse, you've got to know which ones will shamble slowly after you, and which ones are capable of bursts of speed that are anything but human.
But surely, all zombies are alike, no? It should be easy enough to escape from some shambling horde? You'd think so, but according to the 1985 movie Return of the Living Dead, some zombies can retain their mental faculties, and before decay sets in, a twisted semblance of what once was their humanity. Kinda like online journalists.
And in more recent films such as 28 Days Later and the Resident Evil series, the zombies, infected, or whathaveyou are often capable of incredible bursts of speed, or supernatural feats of strength. This is saying nothing of the classic voodoo zombies, created by witch doctors. Now sure, these are just movies, but according to Oscar Wilde, "Life imitates art far more than art imitates Life." Besides, can you really imagine that movies, television, and the internet would lie? The idea is preposterous.
So with that in mind, read on to learn what to look for in zombies, so you might better be prepared. With any luck, this information will help you keep your basal ganglia intact.
The Slow Ones:
These are the zombies encountered in films like George Romero's Night of the Living Dead and Shaun of the Dead. These zombies are often affected by rigor mortis and are in varying states of decomposition. These zombies also tend to be the ones that spread the zombie plague. There might be some symbolism employed in the fact that slow, shambling creatures barely capable of more than groaning and satisfying their base hunger and spreading disease are the chief identifying features of the bulk of what humanity becomes.
Fast Zombies:
At first glance, these zombies may appear similar to The Slow Ones, but with one lethal difference: they are capable of moving with surprising speed and retain more brain functions, so they are more cunning. Er, their two lethal differences are their speed and cunning, and a ruthless efficiency. Their three, no, amongst the lethal differences between these zombies and their slower brethren are these qualities. At press time, they do not have a fanatical devotion to the Pope. Keep an eye out for zombies that look leaner or more wiry than their fellows, or more human-like movement amidst zombies, as these are often indicative that there is more than meets the eye.
Big/Tough Zombies:
These ones are the easiest to spot. Often towering over the rest of their kin, these are monstrous creatures possessing incredible resilience. These tend to appear primarily in video games, but they show up so often, that they deserve an entry here. In addition to being larger (whether in bulk or height) than their comrades, they often have great strength. Look for, well, really big zombies, accomplishing feats no mortal man could hope to. These are often signs that you are facing alien or eldritch zombies.
These are the three most distinct types of zombie often encountered. There are many more variants, but they can be grouped into one of the three main categories. Stay tuned to find out what measures to take against these manxome foes, and how to start identifying where the zombies have come from.
