As I sit and watch the live coverage of the memorial service at Fort Hood this afternoon on CNN, I can't help but realize that this horror could have befallen any one of us in the military community. My husband traveled through one of these readiness centers just a year ago, thankfully without incident. Many of the fallen soldiers were on base in preparation for deployment, some for a second or third time. They were volunteering to protect our safety and freedom, and gave their lives before even leaving our country. It is a senseless loss and our prayers and thoughts go out to all of the families affected by this tragedy.
I don't think there is one member of the military or their families that has gone unaffected by this tragic event. The loss is felt by everyone as we all understand that it could have been us, or one of our loved ones, that was murdered in the safety of an American military base. We all fear the worst when a loved one is deployed, now the fear has spread to the military bases in the United States, and not just overseas. We can only hope and pray that nothing like this ever happens again.
As deployments become the rule instead of the exception among the branches, we need to remember to get the support we need from our families and friends, as well as services offered by the military. Use the internet to chat with others around the world who can relate to what you are going through. Military SOS allows spouses of the military to connect with one another and TroopSupport.com lists many other sites that are tailored to the military and their families, and the specific concerns and challenges that they face.
We thank the heroes of yesterday, today, and the future for their bravery and dedication.
