A beautiful love story unfolds…..you fall in love with your soldier in uniform; you get married and live happily ever after. But you have failed to notice that along with saying "I do" comes a huge responsibility for yourself. You have now become a "Military Spouse". In which also means that you have married the military, because you do not come first, the military does.

So what did you get yourself into? The best way to describe the military life is a very windy roller coaster ride. There will be unexpected twists and turns along the way. If there were a manual to read before we commit to a military marriage, odds are we would all run for our lives. Being a military spouse takes some getting used to, and it takes a lot of patience. It most definitely is and will be the greatest challenge of your life.

Remember there are many things that need to be arranged after you and your soldier are married. The Military Spouse Checklist will ensure that you have everything in order.

What to Expect……..

Frequent Separation: Enlistment means many things, and one of the most important is separation. Whether it is Annual Training (AT), in which they are gone for two weeks out of the year, or an 18 month deployment, expect separation to occur frequently throughout your spouse's military career.

Problems Communicating: In the time that your spouse is deployed, there may be a period in which you are not able to speak with them. This may be due to their job, mission or there is just no service were they are stationed. As frustrating as this may be, it is part of the separation process.

Moving Frequently: Your spouse's enlistment may cause many moves between a very short period of time. Depending on your spouse's branch of service and Military Occupational Specialty (MOS), the numbers of moves may vary.

Long Work Hours: Try and keep in mind that the military is not like any other civilian job. There is a lot of overtime, but no overtime pay. Your soldier's work day may consist of anywhere from 8-16 hours a day.
