Buried in his mixed martial arts mailbag, veteran boxing writer Kevin Iole mentioned that Floyd Mayweather's Saturday night victory against Juan Manuel Marquez could have garnered one million HBO pay per view purchases.
So much for my prediction of 500,000 buys within the context of a recession economy.
Iole clearly states that his reports are based on comments from unnamed sources, but all reports concerning the number of buys for any HBO boxing pay per view can be concerned speculation at best.
Usually the lead promoter for an event, be it Golden Boy Promotions or Top Rank, will release a statement via the pen of a boxing writer about the preliminary numbers a few days following the fight. A few more days will pass and then an "official" figure will come out.
Excuse me for being skeptical, but the numbers provided by the media come from a neutral party, but straight from the promoters or cable companies.
So if Mark Taffet, Senior Vice President of HBO, were to go on record tomorrow and state that Mayweather's pay per view garnered 800,000 buys, I would think to myself, "that is nice, but how can this be verified?"
The individuals at the cable giant and within the promotional firms with the raw data are not sharing the numbers with the media and until the day comes that a neutral party such as Nielsen starts reporting pay per view buys for boxing or mixed martial arts events, I will take all reports with a grain of salt and you might do the same.
