Jesus Soto Karass (23-3-3, 16 KO) walked out the victor Friday night in Maywood California's Activity Center with a workman like ten round unanimous decision against journeyman fighter Carson Jones (18-7-1, 10 KO). En route to victory, Karass floored Jones twice in the three round. Jones was a game opponent, showing heart and mounting rallies of his own over the course of the bout.
The judges saw the fight 97-91, 98-90, 99-89, and the mediocre slugger ranked number two by the WBC stays thick in the hunt for a shot at champion Andre Berto. It will be interesting to see if the WBC's ratings committee will move Karass into the number one spot, as current number one contender Luis Collazo lost to Berto in January. Collazo's performance against Berto was worthy of a decision victory, but poor judging delivered the win to Berto. Will the WBC keep Collazo in the top spot after a solid performance against the champ, or will Karass be bumped up after a victory over a fringe fighter?
In other action the son of Mexican ring God Julio Cesar Chavez, Omar Chavez (14-0-1, 10 KO), remained undefeated with a four round unanimous decision over Rodolfo Armenta (4-1, 3 KO). The younger Chavez's victory was not well received, as the bout was a see-saw affair and the crowd showered the young junior welterweight with a volley of boos when ring announcer Lupe Contrerra read the scorecards of 38-38, 40-36, and 39-37. As this writer has stated before, Omar is more of a side-show ticket seller due to his pedigree than any in the ring talent. Armenta was handpicked for Chavez and had only four professional fights all deep in Mexican territory going into the evening. Even when tossed patsies, the young Chavez fails to deliver anything experts could label impressive.
The evening's action was promoted by Top Rank Promotions in association with Zanfer Promotions and televised by Azteca America.
