If Golden Boy Promotions Fight Night Club boxing series broadcast on the Versus television network and presented free on the Ringtv.com struck out, then Don King's proposed Internet pay preview boxing card tonight won't even make it into the batters box.
I know many of my loyal listeners on The Boxing Truth Radio have labeled me as a notorious cheap skate for my relentless quest to make boxing promoters present quality fights on a free platform like the Internet and not charge fans for even the most meaningless fights on pay per view outlets such as Top Rank's Latin Fury series.
So when Don King announced he will present the undercard to the intriguing battle between Joseph Agbeko and Yonny Perez (which will be presented on Showtime tonight) at a clip of $5.99 on an Internet pay per view, the decision aligns nicely with the norms of boxing's power structure - bleed the consumer to death, even when you cannot turn a profit.
How many hardcore boxing fans will shell out $5.99 to see heavyweight bores Ray Auston and DaVaryl Williamson tangle, along with four other opening bouts featuring prospects few of us have ever hear of?
50, 100, 500, 1,000?
Let us say 1,000 poor souls tune into the event and shell out $5.99, that gives Mr. King and friends a gross profit of $5,999.00. I guess a misguided soul would think, "Well King added $5,000 dollars of income to an event using fights that would not even be televised."
That point would be valid, but is Don King so hard-up that he needs a one time $5,000 revenue influx?
Instead couldn't old electric hair give fans the undercard for free on the Internet, much like he did back in March, 2008 when he gave us Cory Spinks and Devon Alexander in separate fights on a FREE, quality stream?
If old promoters like King and Bob Arum, or even newer promoters like Richard Scahaefer, took the time to assemble a solid modern marketing team, I can assure you they would be able to present quality fights on the Internet, which making much, much more than $5,000.
And guess what Mr. Promoter, you would not be at the mercy of HBO, Showtime, or any other network to okay your fights when you have the distribution mechanism.
For the record, John Chavez and myself would be happy to serve as consultants.
Mike Tyson might we worth the $5.99
While Ray Austin and DaVaryl Williamson are not worth $2.00, hearing Mike Tyson serve as an analyst on King's broadcast might be worth the $5.99. "Iron Mike" is a true historian of the game and should provide solid and entertaining insight.
Will Tyson provide use a classic moment, like his post-Lennox Lewis interview where he stated that, "he might fade in Bolivian?"
