Looking to get one last outing to the Sierras in before the snow? Then check out Woods Lake in the El Dorado National Forest. Fishing, hiking, camping or just picnicking by the lake. You can do it all here. From Sacramento take Hwy 50 to Sly Park Rd. Turn right and proceed 4.6 miles to Mormon Emigrant Trail. Turn left. After 24.6 miles you will hit Hwy 88, turn left and drive 16 miles to Woods Lake Rd.
Fishing
If you like to fish, the Department of Fish and Game stocks this lake so bring your pole and you can cast from the shore, use your waders, inflatable, canoe, or “paddle power” boat. Motorized boats are not allowed. Woods Lake isn’t the only fishing spot though; there are also Round Top Lake, Winnemucca Lake and Fourth of July Lake. You will have to hike to these last three.
Hiking
Speaking of hiking, if you are not into fishing, there are hiking trails a plenty. There is the trail circling around Woods Lake itself but for some great views there are trails to Lake Winnemucca, to Round Top Peak, The Lost Cabin Mine trail, and for overnight, to Fourth of July Lake.
Camping
If you have the time there are many great places to camp. You can stay right at the Woods Lake Campground, up at Lake Winnemucca, only three sites there, and six sites at both Round Top Lake and Fourth of July Lake. Permits for these last three are available at the Amador and Placerville Ranger Stations. Note campfires are not allowed above 8,000 feet, so check with the Ranger when getting permits.
Picnicking
Right by the lake in the trees there are a number of tables, or you can start on the lake loop trail and find a log or comfortable rock. Or if your idea of picnicking is to have the waitress bring your food out to you the Kirkwood Inn and Saloon is just down the road.
Hwy 88 is open all year round so if you can’t make up it until after the first snow fall that’s ok. The ride alone is worth the trip.
