So where were you during the summer of love? Me? Probably playing in a sand box in the mid-peninsula. At that time that was my world. But for many others their world was at the intersection of Haight and Ashbury. Many things have changed since 1967 and whether you where in San Francisco at the time or not even born yet, the Haight today is a blend of both yesterday and today. Late October through January is a great time to go and check it out. The weather is great with the fog gone and the rains not really started yet.
What to do first depends on you. Are you interested in the past? The All You Knead restaurant is still here from the early “70’s as is the Pork Store Café building. Want tie-dye, then Positively Haight Street may be for you. Roberts Hardware has been here since 1931. If hardware is not your thing, there are other views of the past. Though they were not yet born in 1967, Anton, Bryce, Dan, and Wolf are an extension of the past. They are down from Seattle and heading to Santa Cruz. They work “modeling” and asking passers-by for contributions to their adventure.
Looking for something more up to date? There is a Ben and Jerry’s , Martin Macks Restaurant Bar, or Love N Haight Deli & Café. Besides the many restaurants, if shopping is what you like to do there is a store for every taste, SF Outdoors, American Apparel, Aquamarine Enterprises, X generation, and Ambiance to name a few. There is even an organic produce market and a few lingerie stores.
Either way past or present, you can find something to do. Go for a walk and explore, do brunch, have a cup of coffee and people watch, get a tattoo and piercing, heck get your hair cut or (tie) dyed.
