Let's face it: in the day and age of iPods and endless radio station options, it's a challenge to get children to listen to or appreciate classical music.
Toronto is fortunate enough to be home to Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra, which hosts an annual Sing-Along Messiah
This year it takes place at 2 pm on December 20. Why do you need to know about it in November? Because if you want to go, you should buy tickets now; it sells out every year.
The tickets are general seating and people are asked to sit in sections according to which voice part best suits them, but you can keep your family together if your children are too young to sit away from you.
When the singing begins, you are immersed in a 2,700-voice chorus that swells to fill Massey Hall; quite an experience, indeed, and a little more engaging for children than just sitting and listening.
You can bring your own score, or purchase one onsite.
The fun is led by "Maestro Handel," Tafelmusik Director Ivars Taurins, dressed in period costume and with a suitable twinkle in his eye.
Tickets are $39 each.
