Ever thought "I want her hair"- luxurious, long, healthy, bouncy, shiny hair? Well, you are not alone, lots of women have. But, what most of us do not realize is that we can have "her" hair if we understand what hair needs to become healthy.
Hair that is healthy not only grows and looks nice, it also positively affects a woman's self image. According to a recent study by Dove, more than half of U.S. Women feel embarrassed when their hair does not look good and nearly 32.5 million women have canceled their plans because of it. Therefore, in order to achieve healthy hair, it is very important to understand what hair needs and that is moisture, daily care, and minimal heat applications.
Moisture is the primary key to healthy hair. Most African American women do not realize that lack of moisture is the main reason for hair breakage. Washing hair on a frequent basis, (at least once per week), using a deep conditioner specifically geared to moisturize and penetrate the hair shaft, daily moisturizer followed by an oil sealant, is a regimen that will maintain the existing hair on your head while promoting a healthier environment for new hair growth.
A daily hair care regimen is also vital to hair health. You must be consistent. Hair usually grows about 1/4 to 1/2 an inch for most people per month (a little bit every day) so your chances of waking up with long luxurious hair after one rigorous night of treatments is unrealistic. Devote a time of day when you can take care of your hair and stick to it. Your results will not happen over night but they will happen.
And lastly, heated styling tools should be kept to a minimum. No exceptions. No more than once per week for heated appliances. That includes the blow dyer, flat iron, curler, etc. Excessive heat dries out the hair you have been trying so hard to keep moisturized. Remember dryness equals breakage.
Moisture, consistent maintenance, and minimal heat is the key to healthy hair. With a great regimen you will be the one that has hair to envy. Pretty soon the hair that they want will be yours.
