Rune reads tarot and casts runes at Books, Beans, and Candles MS in Birmingham. Despite her chosen name, she studied and read tarot first, starting in college as an adjunct to studying Jungian depth psychology. Twelve years later, as her search took her into Pagan and Wiccan studies, she picked up the runes and was given the name Rune as an outer court Craft name.
Both tarot cards and runes have mystical and magical uses beyond divination, and it was to these uses that she dedicated her first two years with the runes, learning to cast and read them only after acquiring a deep background in their meanings and uses. According to Rune, the word rune comes from "runa" meaning mystery, and this was what made it such an appropriate name and field of study.
She is now a 3rd degree Priestess in her tradition and has been a local council officer of Covenant of the Goddess (CoG). She has taught classes on the runes since 2002.
Today, Rune likes to read the Tarot of the Old Path and Nigel Jackson's Medieval Enchantment deck. She is one of several readers who work out of BBCMS who like to use more than one oracle. Rune said, "The difference is hard to explain, but runes deal with more primal aspects, where tarot is higher level and more detailed. It makes the most sense if you think in terms of the [Teutonic] concept of Wyrd, and the patterns or threads that involves."
She explained how it is possible to combine the two oracles, casting four or five runes and then using tarot to complete the reading. The longer readings might use more runes.
On the subject of how to approach bad news that might show up in a reading, Rune said it depends on how familiar the client is with the process, but generally she will explain that the oracle shows tendencies that exist in the current situation, and that the future is malleable if the indicated actions are taken. This applies not only to bad news; frequently clients are simply not ready for the message the oracle gives and have to find certain things out the hard way.
Prior to reading at BBCMS, Rune worked parties, charity events, and the old Lodestar Books on Highland Avenue. Feedback from her clients has generally been very good. For more information, see her page on Facebook.
