ATLANTA – Here is a rundown of the week’s events as told by the people who made the news:

“Discussing the potential sites for the new Dobbins commissary today was another exciting step in this process. Getting a commissary constructed at Dobbins will be a welcome benefit for the thousands of military personnel, their families, and veterans in the metro Atlanta area. The commissary also will provide almost 100 jobs for our local community and bring hundreds of thousands of people every year to our area to shop at the commissary, providing an additional economic boost for the area. I look forward to continuing to work with Senator Isakson to make this become a reality.”

– U.S. Rep. Phil Gingrey, R-Ga., on a visit to Dobbins Air Reserve Base to discuss a new commissary

“Cpl. Ashe is a tremendous asset to the protection of wildlife and natural resources in the state. His efforts this past year have been significant in the protection of wild turkeys, and we are grateful to have him as part of this team.”

– Georgia Department of Natural Resources’ Wildlife Resources Division Lt. Col. Homer Bryson on Cpl. Johnny Ashe’s selection as the Georgia Chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation’s Officer of the Year

“Twice a year for nearly 50 years, Ms. Sharp has planned and presented a free major concert to the community. Not only has she fostered the spirit of volunteerism in our community, but she has brought together a diverse group of people with different backgrounds and abilities to blend their voices and share their love of music with the public.”

– U.S. Rep. Hank Johnson, D-Ga., on honoring Mary Anne Sharp’s 45 years of service as the choir director for the Decatur Civic Chorus in Decatur, Ga.

“Flying between work in Washington and work back home is part of my job. I can’t think of a better way to use the frequent flyer miles I accumulate than to make sure that our troops and their families can see each other, especially during the upcoming holiday season.”

– U.S. Rep. John Barrow, D-Ga., on donating more than 39,000 frequent flyer miles to the Fisher

House’s Hero Miles Program, which provides free airline tickets to American soldiers and their families
“Millions of Zachary Taylor Presidential $1 coins will make their way into the hands of Americans who will see them and remember the life of former President Taylor and his contributions to our country. We are proud to present this coin to the nation.”

– United States Mint Deputy Director Andy Brunhart on the U.S. Mint’s release of the Presidential $1 coin struck in Taylor’s honor
