Just across the bridge from downtown Reading, West Reading has a more laid-back, artsy vibe. Here, the Penn corridor is lined with niche shops and restaurants that are out of this world. Visitors are encouraged to stroll down Penn Avenue to visit these unique wonders and take part in their specials and events that run during the first Thursday of every month.
After shopping the specials, gazing at art or taking in local music, the most important part of this adventure would be stopping by a one of a kind restaurant for some vegetarian faire!
Here are just a few of the great options Penn Avenue has to offer:
Aladdin Mediterranean Restaurant - 401 Penn Ave: Aladdin’s serves fresh, homemade cuisine and has a fantastic selection of vegetarian appetizers and salads. For the main course, they offer up an entire vegetarian section of the menu! Customers can also mix and match to make their own tasting plate or order up a whole vegetarian platter to share with a friend.
GNA Italian Ristorante – 421 Penn Ave: GNA is a great option because it’s like two restaurants in one. Half of the restaurant is devoted to its pizzeria with a cheaper menu. This side has a wide variety of sides and appetizers to go along with a pizza or salad. For a more upscale dinner menu, visit the other side of GNA. Here, diners will find pasta galore with an impressive amount of meat-free dishes.
Go Fish! Seafood Market and Sushi Bar – 619 Penn Ave: Here is one for all vegetarians who still love fish. My boyfriend bought a fish at their market to cook at home and said it tasted like it had just been caught. With freshness like that, I suggest stopping in Go Fish for some sushi or to grab some seafood for the weekend.
Good Eatz Green Café – 701 Penn Ave: This place is just plain awesome. Good Eatz specializes in gluten-free baked goods, but they also have an eat-in café. Gluten-free, vegetarian, vegan and dairy-free diets are all recognized on their menu. The food is made to order, so each item signifies which diet it can be cooked for. Soup, salad and sandwiches are their specialty and are made with organic and natural ingredients. Could it get any better?!
Seghetti’s Italian Market – 522 Penn Ave: Seghetti’s is a one-stop shop for everything authentic Italian. A daily specials board boasts their homemade creations of the day for eat-in or take-out. And, while you’re there, browse their selection of gourmet cheeses, oils and other ingredients for purchase in the marketplace.
Taste of Crepes – 617 Penn Ave: The name says it all - Scrumptious crepes straight from the villages of France! Customers can choose a concoction from either the savory side or the sweet side of the menu or they can create their own. Varieties include the Vegetarians crepe which is made with mushrooms, tomatoes, spinach and cheese or the Deluxe crepe filled with bananas, strawberries, chocolate syrup, ice cream and whipped cream. There is truly a crepe for everyone.
Haute Chocolate Café – 711 Penn Ave: Chocolate, chocolate, chocolate! Haute Chocolate is much like a modern coffee shop (free wi-fi anyone?) except everything is chocolate. From treats to drinks, domestic to exotic, they have it all. Haute Chocolate is perfect for dessert or to take some chocolate home. They also have a wall of cute and unique gifts for those chocolate lovers in your life.
Winedown Café – 622 Penn Ave: Winedown is another fantastic stop to cap off your night in West Reading. Twenty-three different wines can be ordered by the bottle or by the glass and can be paired with cheeses, desserts or small plates. Winedown’s atmosphere is truly a great place to “wine-down”.
So, the next time you’re looking for something interesting to do on a Thursday night, West Reading is the place to be. Take in all that Penn Avenue has to offer and then enjoy the unique, fun and most importantly, vegetarian friendly food options!
