It appears that for almost a decade nearly $40 million has been accumulating in an account that the city of Baltimore had no idea existed. The Baltimore Sun broke this story late last night.

How is this possible? How can a city just misplace millions of dollars over a decade? During this same decade the city has had to create and raise phone, energy, and other taxes. It is now clear that if the city would have been properly accounting for all of their revenue that parts of these tax increases would not have been necessary. What other "misplaced accounts" are out there? This sad incident is a glaring example of how horribly run this bureaucracy is. This could never happen on such a scale at a privately run corporation without people being fired right away. I really do not think something like this could even happen in the private sector.

Tax paying Baltimore citizens deserve better than this. We have had a lot of embarrassing things happen to our city over the past decade but this may be at the top of the list.

If you made a partial tax payment over the last few years to the city of Baltimore then it might have just been sitting there paying for nothing all of these years. Wouldn't you have rather had that money in your pocket? The city can make this up to us by finally doing the right thing and CUTTING OUR PROPERTY TAXES. It is now clear that when they say "Well the money is not there to cut taxes" that in fact it is. I urge every single one of you to not forget this incident and to demand the firing of the official or officials responsible. They are counting on us just letting this pass. This predicament was outrageous and unforgivable and we can not just let it drop.
