Homelessness In Baltimore

August 15, 5:53 PM

In almost every section of Baltimore it is hard not to encounter a homeless person. You can build new buildings and come up with catchy sayings but the sites and smells of homelessness will discourage even the most optimistic Baltimore fan.

Mayor Dixon has made the homelessness issue a big part of her first elected term as mayor. Earlier this year she released a 10 year plan to end homelessness.  Some consider it a pretty lofty goal while others consider it a gimmick.  All I know is that on the street level there are still some major homelessness issues.

As many of you know I jog just about every day.  I often run under the JFX downtown. I have noticed that there has been an increase in homeless people in the parking lot where the Farmers' Market is held on Sundays. There is often a trailer set up with people gathered around it in the northwest corner of the parking lot.  You can view part of the scene here and read about why this is happening.  This is only a few blocks away from city hall.  I question the logic of gathering large numbers of homeless people this close to downtown.  It is an absolute mess when this gathering happens.

I am not the only one concerned about the location of homeless people. This topic has been in the news quite a bit lately. Check out this article, this article, and this article.

Finally here is a graphic article about homeless life on the streets of Baltimore from the City Paper.

Miscellaneous Thanksgiving thoughts

There is supposed to be a massive redevelopment project at the Rotunda in Hampden. It has not started yet though. The developers are not worried about the 800 employees of nearby Zurich leaving. If I was a potential retailer who was looking for space... Read More
