I just got off the phone with a local activist who was wondering why almost every single criminal involved with the drug trade who gets arrested is back on the street right away. These individuals sometimes are given probation before judgment or convicted and given suspended sentences. There are many active drug dealers on the streets who are violating the terms of their probation and nothing is being done about it. I have written about how in Pigtown there are citizens who have arranged crime summits where representatives of the State's Attorney's office were questioned about specific cases and individuals. We need our politicians to hold public hearings where they bring up specific names of specific criminals and ask why they are are still on the streets. Community leaders can only do so much. We need our politicians to step up to the plate and fix this broken system by identifying and solving the specific problems. Do not be afraid to name names. Someone needs to be held accountable for the revolving door criminal justice system.
